Review: Homestead Farm Shop, Ormskirk

Visited the Homestead Cafe and Farm Shop on Lancashire Day weekend to sample some local produce and have a bite to eat.

On a bitterly cold, and wet, afternoon it was nice to amble through the small but well stocked farm shop and enjoy some traditional Lancashire food.

The barn has recently been converted to house a cafe and it’s definitely a sound investment, as you can dine in style with homemade cakes, great brews and a very traditional Lancashire menu.

I went for a farmhouse omelet (swapped the mushrooms for cheese) that came with a small bucket of chips. A half pint of Bowland Bitter to drink. My girlfriend went for Whitby scampi and chips (ignoring the Lancashire Day theme!) and a pot of Lancashire Tea.

The food was delicious. The omelet was done to perfection, not too soggy and not too crispy. There was plenty of ham in it and this made for a tasty dish. The bucket of chips was actually served in a bucket, a nice touch, and we were offered Lancashire Sauce to go with it. I didn’t have any due to its smell reminding me of too many of my Nan’s dinners!

The scampi and chips was lovely, scampi cooked nicely to be soft and tasty. We decided against having a desert and instead had a look around the farm shop.

There is a good selection of local ice creams at the farm shop, including Mrs Dowson’s Ice Cream that is based just off the A59 on the way to Clitheroe. We bought some white chocolate ice cream, a flapjack and got some free shortbread thrown in.

Homestead Farm Shop is definitely recommended, for a high class dining experience (they take party bookings and are doing a Christmas menu). The service was friendly, the food timely and the produce most importantly, local.
